Hey Everyone,

One of Substack’s key findings on its subscription network is that open-rates are correlated with conversion rates of free to paid readers. Creators, this is important!

How can we improve Open Rates?

  • Write high quality content

  • Create a personal connection to the reader (personal brand + community)

  • Attract the right readers, those who are highly aligned to the topic

  • Have highly engaging Titles and Subject lines (that are optimized for clicks)

  • Use emojis in a creative way that promotes skimming (how people ‘actually read’)

  • Have amazing visual branding and enough visual material: doodles, pictures, infographics, charts, embeds, etc…

  • Write high quality highly shareable content, that’s not too frequent (nobody wants too much from one Publication in their stuffed inbox).

  • Strive for original clever storytelling that is universally enjoyed, that keeps attracting the reader back.
