Hey Guys,
As you know I’m new around here, like some of you as well. I’ve taken an interest in watching Substack’s community and I have a keen interest in interviewing more early-stage creators to the community. You can watch some of those here.
Building a Community of Writers
If Substack is to build another model of the ownership economy for professional writers, we have to change our mindset.
Build win-win': actually want other Creators to succeed
Positivity and participation (like, comment and support the work other writers)
Nuzzle Substack Network: cross-pollination within our niche (guide niche traffic)
Empower others and build community
Like, comment, re-tweet on the work of other Creators (LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, etc.…)
In my own exploration of Substack’s categories and professional writer categories I think what’s stood out me is the diversity and inclusion. The variety of different niches is what makes Substack most valuable.
While there’s some models that are better for monetization, at the end of the day this is about the passion economy, we write about what we are interested in, sometimes that which we have spent years doing as a hobby or as a profession.
I wanted to take a tour of some of the creators I’ve explored in Tweets, which you might know already or might be new to you.

So let’s get into it: (this is reverse chronological order from my Twitter). Numbers just help me track how many I can fit on the Substack length limit.
1. Li’s Newsletter
Li Jin is one of the early adaptors of Substack. She worked for a16z who is one of the VCs funding Substack. She is notable for her insights on the Ownership Economy and also can be found here. Highly recommend her podcasts and video interviews as well.
2. Seeing Things
I’m very fond if Substack’s efforts to build artistic community in visual art, illustration, poetry, literature, history of art, book clubs, local journalism and other arts & culture experiments. I’m just at the start of exploring these.
Liza Donnelly is a New Yorker cartoonist and writer and journalist and all kinds of things.
3. Health Data Science Newsletter
There are more A.I. and data science substacks than I originally thought. Andrea is writing about an incredible niche. Andrea’s posts are based on her research and the latest news in this area, and she discusses how healthcare professionals can get into data science.
4. The Microdose
Even some University faculty and academics are starting Newsletters on their labs.
Every Friday, The Microdose will bring you a handful of brief takes on developments in the field of psychedelics, covering everything from scientific research and policy to business and culture.
Psychedelics on Substack? I like it!
I think they may have an entire team helping them put it together.
5. Dispatches from the Basement
In my 20s practically all I did was write poems. It’s like another lifetime. But suffice to say this is one of my favorite Substacks I discovered recently.
Joe is a great example of a writer that’s taking back how he shares his work from the outdated publishing industry.
Sadly I’m already getting the dreaded “Near email length limit” notification.
