I share your bullishness on the Substack platform, though not as much on the recommendations that are part of the sign-up flow of a publications. The conversion rates from those sign-ups are almost zero... whether due to an information overload in their inboxes, or because of poor targeting, I'm not sure.

Yes, the overlap between peer networks and niche networks perhaps not perfect. I wonder how much all of this is. Just a numbers game sometimes in that you need some kind of scale to even get one long-term reader.

They and cherry pick the data and I do wish there was more transparent data about everything. On the other hand, it's good execution on a non-algarithmic discovery mechanism.

Conversion rate optimization is one of the big mysteries of substack. Are you finding success with in app chat?

I've been very shy about using it, because there's no disclaimer that can protect me in case someone uses the chat for personalised financial advice.

I'm active on Twitter and Telegram though, and it's somewhat of a hard sell to just tell everybody to move over to Substack. Perhaps a multi-node free-for-all chat room could help spark engagement.

Yeah, recommendations could work in theory. I think the friction might be too low. Some readers say that they end up subscribing to 8x extra newsletters because they were nudged to press the coloured button. While nudging isn't an algorithm per se, it's moving in that direction.

You are right, topic category chat rooms could be super interesting and perhaps much more dynamic. They would also enable creators to communicate with each other in a novel way that could boost engagement.

I'm extremely shy and introverted generally speaking and as such I mostly just do my own thing. My discussion threads on substack web have not gone well.
